Communication in Future

After this IDP program, it is understandable that an evolvement of media communication from the former printed media, TV and radio to nowadays Internet, TIVO, other online sharing and etc. A media revolution had been happened as advance Internet technology appeared. Traditional printed newspapers and magazines goes on line such as OhmyNews International which is an English online newspaper since 2000. Its content is almost citizen reporter which is citizens playing a role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing and disseminating news and other information.

People getting more relay on Internet for knowledge absorbing or information sharing. Everyone can be a prosumer and also available in Internet society. Blog is one of the methods that passing own ideas and comments to others thereby become more influential. This is a power of masses and similar to "cell-division" circumstances. Distribution of news by Internet is a faster way compared to print.

Communication practice and culture have been changed owing to technology development. In recent years, significantly increase in capacity of Internet usage. Why people changed their practice from reading printed materials to Internet browsing? Redactors deem that Internet communication method can reduce time and cost also extends to lots number of receivers.

Prototype of Web Design

Every web site has its own structure which also according to four situations - Scannability, Usability, Readability and Credibility.



Scannability which is to make keywords stand out, use highlighting liberally. By practice, 79% of Web users scan pages and not read word-by-word. Web document design should be scannable. A vivid headings and subheadings which are in readable type such as Yahoo search engine. Also, colored text backgrounds can be used for highlighting, but never use blue for words. Owing to that specific color is reserved for hyperlinks. Another essential is bulleted and numbered lists slow down the scanning eye and can draw attention and important points.

Usability is often making Web site useful to as many people as possible. Consistent color tone for Web frame and wordings will be advantage readers to scan through web page. Color is the main element that enhances usability; too much different colors only hinder readers from reading path.


Readability is eyetracking visualization show the readers oftern scan Web page as an F-shapped pattern like the Web page of JosDB.com. Usually, people using horizontal movement as their reading path. Across the upper part from the top to the center and down to bottom. Finally, a vertical movement on the left side of content. Deservedly, people are not exactly the same reading pathway. Sometimes E or L patterns go instead of F. However, it can be roughly resemble an F as dominant reading pattern.

Credibility is short of professionalism of web page which include high quality graphics, good writing, outbound hypertext, update pages and etc. The perception of credibility can goes a long way in reassuring users have reached a Web site that provides useful and consistent information. Also using "Marketese" language is necessary for building up its specialization. These are the things when designing web site to boost site credibility.

Document Design

An effective Web site is rely on readable document design also easy to access the information when people in need. What is a effectual Web page for audiances? A simple analysis can be shared here.

The Web site of Fitness First is simple and clear. It contains header with company name (logo) which traditionally placed at the top left side. Its brand color - sky blue with contrasting white color. A search engine is arranged under header that can facilitate readers for information searching. Footer includes frequent entry areas such as "Class Timetable", "Club Locator" and other advertisements.

The whole page is in comfortable perception because of white space on a page. White space can rests readers' eyes and more organized to direct to critical information. Surely it should be in proper proportion in document. Its function is not only rest for audience, also has better distinction of each small part.

Bulleted or numbered list is a typographical symbol to introduce information by point form. In such a way that let audiences have better reading path also protrudes some important messages. Refer to Fitness First Web page which contains a bulleted list in the middle. It has been highlighted in "What's Up" and four different types of information (or links) were arranged as bulleted list.

Another advertisement is from Bravissimo which is a lingerie and swimwear online shop. A abounding frame and full of different pictures and less white space for readers.

Header used warm tone as brand color and company name still located at the top left hand side. Besides that company name, a customer services hotline also attached at the header in order to facilitate customers for inquiries. A few indexes are placed under a header, there are their product categories and done in boldface.

This advertisement is good for scanning as the portion of pictures is much more than texts. It is easy to have eye-catching from those colorful photos and art text. Although too much typefaces may affect the whole impression, Bravissimo is in appropriated arrangement.

Genre Cognition

The term of Genres which is easy to associate with art and literature. Tranditionally, it is represented poetry, prose and drama. Nowadays, Genres are defined as vague categories with no fixed boundaries. Also, a type of texts used for utterance or any form of art.

In Hong Kong, Gum Siu Man is one of a very famous and traditional caricaturist. He started his comic work from the 80s. Audiences have been attracted by his funny expression of skill and animated characters. Gum using his satire on reflecting society issues. Moreover, his comic has brought lighthearted atmosphere to lots of busy Hong Kong people. However, Gum was also criticized as slapstick comic by part of audiences. It is because of his compositions sometimes contain indecent and abusive languages.


In another way that there are lots of various publication categories which are some traditional literary genres like poem, poetry, prose, novels and drama. These are also types of Genres and Hong Kong Arts Development also give an impetus on those Genres.

Besides that, Genres can also be distinguished in film genre, TV genre, music genre and one rarely use Genre is video game genre such as Puzzle which need to solve puzzles for progress through the levels.

My first Page

Today, 27 May 2008 is a sunny day and the first time for weblog creation. It is really exciting exercise for me but love to learn it.

Same as other Internet browser, I am also one of the persons who love to browse freely. Never consider about web editing and web designing. However, after studied through this program - Issues in Publication and Design. It made students easy to learn a basic concept about "Style Guide", "Genre", "Writing and Navigating Web" and etc. Those knowledges of web site design made people have fundamental ideas for identification about web structure. Also, known what is "Triptych" which is a very simple promotion material and can get touch with it on daily lives.
